Angel’s Stadium Adds Vegan and Gluten Free Options.

I am big on the notion that being vegan really doesn’t prohibit me from doing any of the things that I love, it actually has made everything I love to do even better. I talk a lot about my cruelty free choices in fashion, and beauty products…and while I love those things very much…I also love baseball. I love being outdoors at the games, I love the energy of the fans, and I also love that it is the one sport that I actually understand. Football for me is a lot of looking around and cheering when everyone else does…but baseball, I get.

So, being a born and raised Orange County-an of course I’m an Angel fan. A few years ago they added a California Pizza Kitchen with a chef salad which is a noted step in the right direction from hot dogs and pizza…but still not an option for a vegan or even a vegetarian. So while I love going to the games, it isn’t something where I could sit and get into some stadium food with my fellow fans…untill now.

This year the stadium debuted a welcome addition to the line up of eateries called Melissa’s Harvest. Among the vegan and gluten free options are a black bean burger, hummus, veggie dog, veggie wrap, sweet potato fries, and a market greens dish which I’m guessing was a salad. They also have gluten free nachos which would of course be vegetarian but not vegan. I went right in for the veggie dog on a gluten free bun. The veggie dog was great, bigger than the well know Tofu-pups we buy at the grocery store….but the bun was a different story. Take a thick piece of bread with a cakey consistency…cut it in half and put the veggie dog in the middle.

Very strange.

Mind you, I ate the whole thing…so it couldn’t have been that bad. That really isn’t saying much as I have yet to meet a piece of bread I didn’t like, but I felt all too full the rest of the night. I can’t really figure out why they chose that kind of bun to go with such an awesome veggie dog. I don’t avoid gluten though so I am trying to take into account that there may be some Angel’s fans who are really appreciating the gluten free aspect of the dish.

Regardless, I can’t help but feel a little hopeful when I find something like a major sports arena offering healthier, and of course more humane, options in the food courts. If there are enough people requesting something, it will inevitably be an option. Simple supply and demand.

All in all I am thrilled to have the vegan options there and I suggest everyone give them a try next time at a game. Enjoy :)

Stand. Speak. Act.

I’ll be at CSUF this weekend whooping it up with other activists at the Social Justice Summit.

“The Social Justice Summit provides a forum for people to exchange ideas about improving the state of our communities, offers space to dialogue about the obstacles to creating effective change, provides effective tools for social action, and offers tangible grassroots solutions.Learn about human rights issues, environmental concerns, inequality and oppression on a local, national and global level.” – per the website’s description.

Want to know the best part? We will listen to Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Jamie Kilstein of Citizen Radio speak. :)

Peace Out GoDaddy

The story about Bob Parsons killing the Elephant in Africa broke early last week…and yet I am really just writing about it today. The reason being I have been absolutely lost for words on the subject. I’m horrified that such disgusting behavior and complete disregard for life exists out in the world. As a vegan, I deal with this uncomfortable feeling a lot…but it isn’t everyday that I realize that I am a patron of it. Bob Parsons owns the company GoDaddy which WAS the host for the domain of this little website you are reading right now. Ooops. The vegan and animal rights community is a huge presence on the internet….and a good portion of it is smacking their foreheads just like me and wishing I hadn’t gone with this company. PETA is among the many of us that is now leaving GoDaddy. How were we to know though? The important thing is that we switch our domain hosts asap and spread the word never to pay this company another dime.

Incase you hadn’t heard about the GoDaddy drama, I’ll recap it for you. Bob Parsons was over in Africa recently and murdered an elephant claiming that he is a hero now because he rid the locals of something that was ruining their crops. Mind you, the whole thing was video taped and narrated like the guy was Indiana Jones. After shooting the Elephant, the video shows locals hacking at the elephant carcass and eating the flesh…all while wearing GoDaddy hats. Gross.

The flip side of this is that the Elephant was accused of eating the locals crops and the people are hungry. That being said there are many other suggested ways of guarding crops such as fences and relocation. Regardless of what the issue was, the gore of the whole process is appalling. When someone is breaking into our house, are we revered for taping ourselves shooting and dismembering the burglar? No, that would be disgusting. See the relevance in the comparison?

If Parsons truly had wanted to help these native Africans, there are countless other way he could have helped them out. If you want to perform a charitable act then do so by stimulating the economy in some form. Maybe help to maintain crops somewhere that the elephants aren’t already living or invest in a fencing system to keep the elephants from eating the crops now…and in the future.

Upon returning from his trip Parson publicly boasts this murder as a triumph and builds himself into a savior. Hey Mr. Parson, I have a news flash for you…you are an aging man with an ear-ring and something to prove who used an automatic weapon on a creature that is known to be docile and only attack to defend itself when provoked….a creature who is threatened by extinction…an animal who’s mourning process mirrors how humans grieve a loss…you are not heroic. Parsons showed extremely bad judgment, insensitivity and disregard.

I got pretty nervous at the thought of switching my domain host, but this motivated me to dive in and make the switch. Surprisingly, it was quite simple. I went with NameCheap.com because it isn’t pricey and as far as I could research…isn’t owned or affiliated with any Bob Parson company. If you have a domain with GoDaddy, my suggestion is to click the following link and follow the very easy instructions http://mikerotman.tumblr.com/post/4228710476/leavegodaddy I found this link on www.EcoVeganGal.com and it made my life a whole lot easier. If I can do it…you probably can too.

Something I learned from Bob Linden of www.GoVeganRadio.com is to vote with your dollars. I am vegan, I protest rodeos and boycott the circus….but being an informed shopper is just as important.

I truly hope that in light of Bob Parsons’ true colors showing through, he loses a lot of business. The savage killing and documentation of this elephant shouldn’t be praised, but should be a wake up call to GoDaddy patrons that it is time to make a switch like many of us already have.

February Is Adopt A Shelter Rabbit Month <3

The Orange County Animal Care Center is branding February as Adopt A Shelter Rabbit Month. Come take a look this month and we will have different adoptable bunnys featured, and lots of opportunities to learn about how to care for your new little ball of fur. Everyone who adopts a rabbit in February goes home with a goody bag full of stuff to get you started.

I grew up having rabbits as pets and they are awesome. Pretty much everyone I know has a story of how much they loved their pet bunny as a child. Get in the Valentine’s Day spirit and spread a little love to the bunnys at the shelter. I was shocked when I first started volunteering here at how many rabbits the shelter has, you usually think of just homeless dogs and cats. Nope. Lots of bunnys.

Can’t think of what to get your luv for Valentine’s day? Have an apartment that is just too small for a puppy? Come by the OC Shelter this month and take a look, I bet you will fall in love.

Don’t forget Rabbits require just as much attention and care as any other pet, so make sure you are ready for the commitment. The volunteers at the shelter are always there to help you though, and answer any questions or concerns you might have about caring for your pet.

Factory Farming Pigs

I love to write, and I love to write about all the fun things that have come out of being vegan. I really think that the most effective persuasion is created in a show and tell manner. Shoving values down someone’s throat doesn’t get you very far, but being a good example seems to make a much bigger impact. I don’t scold people for not being vegan, but I do come armed with indisputable facts to back up my decision to live a cruelty free and healthy live. In doing so, I have heard every response, “It’s not like I am killing the cow myself, it’s already dead by the time it gets to the grocery store,” etc. or the excuses from vegetarians that eating dairy is ok because it’s not actually harming the animal.

Today I am frustrated though, I feel like there is no nice way to say this and people really do deserve to know the truth.

Alright, well I went back and forth when writing about what happened recently with pigs being buried alive in Korea. It’s not pleasant but it is absolutely necessary for people to know whats going on. By eating meat and dairy, even from what is said to be “free range farms”, you are absolutely supporting what you are about to read.

SO, there was an outbreak of foot & mouth disease in Korea. Foot and mouth disease affects cloven hoofed animals like pigs, cows and goats. A country that has cases of it is unable to export the animals’ meat. Therefor as soon as there is an outbreak, a sort of urgent pandemonium comes over and the animals are killed frantically.

On January 7, 2011 it was reported that 100 pigs were captured on film being dumped by a dump truck, and buried alive in an attempt to rid themselves of a foot and mouth disease outbreak.

No one in their right mind wants to look at that image, but unfortunately anyone who eats meat is supporting this behavior. Factory farming of animals is a booming business, there is no way around it. Meat is in high demand and the idea that the meat farmer might lose some revenue sparked the incident depicted above. Your sausage McMuffin supported this. The hamburgers you are bbqing this weekend supported this. The bacon you ate at the brunch buffet on sunday supported this. I wish there was a way around it, but there isn’t.

The only way that factory farming will stop is if there isn’t such a demand for meat. Maybe you don’t buy meat that was produced at this company, or maybe you make a point to only purchase meat labeled “free range farming”. Regardless, you are supporting this industry. If there is a great demand for meat, there will be more factory farming going on resulting in what you are seeing in these pictures.

I don’t know what if any the consequences will be for this business. When the gross brutality was exposed in the Conkilin Dairy Farm investigation http://www.mercyforanimals.org/ohdairy/ I think the farm hand featured in the startling video was fine $1,000.00 and can’t be around animals for 3 years….ummm he punched a baby cow in the head and then repeatedly stabbed it with a pitch fork…3 years doesn’t quite seem like enough. We never really heard if anything was done about the chickens being thrown into grinders while still alive at the factory farm that supplies meat to KFC http://www.peta2.com/TAKECHARGE/undercover-georges/ . All I know is that the punishment if any is embarrassing for these hideous acts of violence. I know we’re far from a solution to all this, but choosing not to support this industry is easy. There is an alternative for everything you think you might miss by becoming vegan, even if you might miss the actual meat….won’t you feel better knowing that you are not supporting an industry that makes no question about burying 100 pigs alive? I don’t want any part of that.

CIRCUS SHMIRCUS….

RINGLING BROS’THE CRUELEST SHOW ON EARTH

The Circus is back and town and that means people are still buying into not only animal slavery…but supporting the criminalistic abuse that the ‘circus’ animals endure everyday…all day…year round.

For someone who isn’t informed about all this, you will probably assume that I am just opposed to using animals for entertainment. Although the thought of keeping wild animals captive for our own amusement is wrong, that isn’t the only concern with this. Ringling Brothers has been caught (yes, there is a lot of evidence…this is NOT just someone’s theory) beating elephants with bull hooks, tying up baby elephants by each limb and pulling untill they scream, punching and kicking these animals as the main form of training for this ‘show’. A manager of the training program has admitted that each of the elephants has been bludgeoned with a bull hook (which is a giant metal hook) during training. Electroshock is another form of training. In one of the videos that was taken by an undercover activist posing among the trainers, you actually hear one of the trainers instruct another to ” “Sink that hook into ’em. When you hear that screaming, then you know you got their attention!” while using a bullhook on an elephant. Fucking barbaric. Tigers are viciously struck with sticks, sometimes untill bloody, so that they will perform confusing tricks. The tigers are literally shoved into cages for travel often breaking bones that go untreated.

http://www.ringlingbeatsanimals.com/bound-babies.asp <—- some play by play pictures, very informative and a little less gut wrenching than the videos. I suggest looking at these if you want to skip the video.

The following facts are taken from www.ringlingbeatsanimals.com :

Since 2000, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has cited Ringling numerous times for serious violations of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), such as the following:

  • Improper handling of dangerous animals
  • Failure to provide adequate veterinary care to animals, including an elephant with a large swelling on her leg, a camel with bloody wounds, and a camel injured on train tracks
  • Causing trauma, behavioral stress, physical harm, and unnecessary discomfort to two elephants who sustained injuries when they ran amok during a performance
  • Endangering tigers who were nearly baked alive in a boxcar because of poor maintenance of their enclosures
  • Failure to test elephants for tuberculosis
  • Unsanitary feeding practices

In fact, the USDA currently has open multiple investigations of potential violations of the AWA by Ringling.

At least 26 elephants, including four babies, have died since 1992, including an 8-month-old baby elephant named Riccardo who was destroyed after he fractured his hind legs when he fell from a circus pedestal. Elephants are not the only animals with Ringling to suffer tragic deaths. In 2004, a 2-year-old lion died of apparent heatstroke while the circus train crossed the Mojave Desert.

This is wrong people, and illegal in a lot of other countries. The best way to stop this disgusting form of abuse is to make it unacceptable. Inform your children that supporting something like this is not ok, tell your neighbor, the person in the cubicle next to you, the other soccer moms…whomever. I’ve noticed that most people aren’t aware of what is going on behind the scenes here, and upon learning, refuse to support it any further. Here are a couple websites with some very useful information about the circus. These sites are appropriate for just about anyone to view. I try to warn you when they are really gruesome but these are impactful, yet fact of the matter.

http://www.circuses.com/

A few of us will be joining the Orange County People For Animal Association (OCPA http://www.ocpausa.org/ ) in front of the Anaheim Honda Center to protest against this cruelty. We will be getting there between 4 and 5 PM. It really is all about awareness, and I truly believe these people buying tickets and supporting this abuse are not informed. If you are in the So Cal area and would like to join us, I would love to see you there. Get creative, read up on the facts, make a sign, or put together a pamphlet and inform some people.

Here you go- remember, nothing changes for the better unless you are informed enough to do so.

President Clinton Goes Mostly Veg

Recently President Clinton made a statement, saying he has lost 24 lbs. and rebuilt his health adopting a “mostly vegan diet”, adding that the ‘mostly’ comes from eating fish once in a while. It truly is the most healthy diet (see ‘Why Vegan’ for the supporting facts), and by far the most humane. His recent statements have brought a great light on the plant-based diet and its many benefits.

In an interview with Wolf Blitzer, Clinton explained that his decision came from a combination of learning that his bypass began to clog up on him being a sign that his cholesterol was not under control, and wanting to shed some extra weight before his daughter’s wedding. After researching the vegan diet and reading up on T. Collin Campbell’s ‘The China Study’ he came to the conclusion that this was how he was going to get healthy. Remember, Chelsea’s wedding was publicized as a ‘mostly vegan’ event.

Way to go Bill…you look fantastic.

I wonder if he has quit smoking cigars in light of his new health kick? ;)

What Happened To Prop 2 CA….I came across the following article on Veg News about the laws coming about regarding farmers in Ohio and it got me thinking… what happened to Prop 2 that was voted in the same time that President Obama was elected? This is the article I read:

Historic Ohio Animal Laws

Animal activist groups reach landmark animal welfare agreements with Ohio government officials.

“This week, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) announced that it had reached a series of agreements dramatically increasing animal welfare laws by working with Ohioans for Humane Farms, state agriculture leaders, and Ohio Governor Ted Strickland. The landmark resolutions include phasing out extreme confinement systems for breeding pigs and veal calves, an immediate moratorium on battery cage construction, a ban on downer cows being sent to slaughter, and establishing felonious penalties for cockfighting. Additionally, gestation crates will be banned after December 21, 2010, and the new agreement suspends a scheduled factory farming initiative slated for an upcoming ballot.” (By Liz Miller)

That, in my opinion, is a decent step for Ohio which is home to a notable amount of animal death cam…I mean meat farms. In 2008 California residents voted in favor of Prop 2, which was named the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act. The proposition adds a chapter to Division 20 of the CA Public Health ad Safety Code to prohibit the confinement of certain farm animals in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up, and fully extend their limbs. The measure deals with three types of confinement: veal crates, battery cages, and sow gestation crates. Not only are these minimal changes an improvement to whatever “life” these farmed animals are alloted…but they might increase the sanitary aspects of things like chicken eggs (or at least that’s what I told my meat-eating friends so they would vote this in) because instead of a chicken spending its whole life sitting and defecating on the eggs you later use for your omelette, they might be able to get up and go do their chicken business somewhere else.

Remember this??

The California Secretary of State’s summary from the Official Voter Information Guide of Proposition 2 is as follows:

  • Requires that calves raised for veal, egg-laying hens and pregnant pigs be confined only in ways that allow these animals to lie down, stand up, fully extend their limbs and turn around freely.
  • Exceptions made for transportation, rodeos, fairs, 4-H programs, lawful slaughter, research and veterinary purposes.
  • Provides misdemeanor penalties, including a fine not to exceed $1,000 and/or imprisonment in jail for up to 180 days.

Except for Rodeos??? Despite my strong opinions that farming animals for meat is wrong, I think anyone reading this could be a little embarrassed by the fact that the statement “except for rodeos” is in actual legal ballot verbage. It’s 2010 people, find something better to do than mutilate animals in a rodeo.

Regardless, we voted this law in on November 4, 2008, the key portion of the statute will become operative on January 1, 2015. Farming operations have until that date to implement the new space requirements for their animals, and the statute will prohibit animals in California from being confined in a proscribed manner thereafter. I am interested in what farmers are doing in preparation for this 1/1/15 date, and what legal team is designated to enforce the terms of prop 2. We will see California… I for one am looking forward to seeing what comes of this. I find it strange that once we voted this in…we haven’t heard much about it since.

Incase you are not familiar with current standard procedure at farms…here is a vid to catch you up. Warning…it isn’t pretty and the vid might be a little disturbing…but how can we change things if we don’t really know whats going on..

JUNE IS NATIONAL ADOPT A CAT MONTH!! <3

As most pet people know, summer time is referred to as “kitty season” because this is the time of year that cats have the most litters. Approximately 4 million cats end up in shelters every year. The only way to aid this problem is to ALWAYS get your pet fixed or neutered. For help with low-cost spay/neuter click here -http://ow.ly/1VJ3F

That all being said I want to lay a little shameless persuasion on you. If you are at all in a place in your life where you are thinking of adopting a pet, consider going to your local shelter and looking at the cats…after all..it IS national adopt a cat month. Kittys are awesome, but adopting a cat that is a few years old is equally rewarding..and sometimes less of a hassle. Cats are known for lying around in the sun and only paying attention to you when they want to be fed. I strongly beg to differ – my cat is as much like a lap dog as any chihuahua I have met. I adopted him 10 years ago and am not quite sure how I got along before having him around. Not only does he bounce around the house with me as soon as I get home, he plays with his toys, and even ‘barks’ at himself in the mirror on occassion….as well as lay in the sun and bug me for food at dinner time.

Here’s some info about how beneficial it can be to have a pet around:

Pets Can Improve Your Mood:
For those who love animals, it’s virtually impossible to stay in a bad mood when a pair of loving puppy eyes meets yours, or when a super-soft cat rubs up against your hand. Research supports the mood-enhancing benefits of pets. A recent study found that men with AIDS were less likely to suffer from depression if they owned a pet. (According to a press release, men with AIDS who did not own a pet were about three times more likely to report symptoms of depression than men who did not have AIDS. But men with AIDS who had pets were only about 50 percent more likely to report symptoms of depression, as compared to men in the study who did not have AIDS.)

Pets Control Blood Pressure Better Than Drugs:
Yes, it’s true. While ACE inhibiting drugs can generally reduce blood pressure, they aren’t as effective on controlling spikes in blood pressure due to stress and tension. However, in a, groups of hypertensive New York stockbrokers who got dogs or cats were found to have lower blood pressure and heart rates than those who didn’t get pets. When they heard of the results, most of those in the non-pet group went out and got pets!

Pets Encourage You To Get Out And Exercise:
Whether we walk our dogs because they need it, or are more likely to enjoy a walk when we have companionship, dog owners dothan non-pet owners, at least if we live in an urban setting. Because exercise is good for stress management and overall health, owning a dog can be credited with increasing these benefits.

Pets Can Help With Social Support:
When we’re out walking, having a dog with us can make us more approachable and give people a reason to stop and talk, thereby increasing the number people we meet, giving us an opportunity to increase our network of friends and acquaintances, which also has great stress management benefits.

Pets Stave Off Loneliness and Provide Unconditional Love:
Pets can be there for you in ways that people can’t. They can offer love and companionship, and can also enjoy comfortable silences, keep secrets and are excellent snugglers. And they could be the best antidote to loneliness. In fact, research shows that nursing home residents reported less loneliness when visited by dogs than when they spent time with other people! All these benefits can reduce the amount of stress people experience in response to feelings of social isolation and lack of social support from people.

Pets Can Reduce Stress—Sometimes More Than People:
While we all know the power of talking about your problems with a good friend who’s also a good listener, recent research shows that spending time with a pet may be even better! Recent research shows that, when conducting a task that’s stressful, people actually experienced less stress when their pets were with them than when a supportive friend or even their spouse was present! (This may be partially due to the fact that pets don’t judge us; they just love us.)

It’s important to realize that owning a pet isn’t for everyone. Pets do come with additional work and responsibility, which can bring its own stress. However, for most people, the benefits of having a pet outweigh the drawbacks. Having a furry best friend can reduce stress in your life and bring you support when times get tough. (via about.com)

 The Oil Spill Drama…

My heart absolutely breaks when I think about the animals being affected by the oil spill right now. It is an awful, awful situation and there is no way around it. Things seem to get progressively worse every day, and even if someone was to get their shit together and get a handle on the leak…there are countless animals in dire straights right now. BP said it would donate money from selling the oil recovered in the spill to wildlife protection in the region. It said it can’t yet predict the amount of money that will go into its fund to create, restore, improve and protect wildlife habitat. Pretty weak promise if you ask me. More than 400 species of fish, birds and wildlife are being threatened from the spill, and coastal habitats in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida are in trouble. I know that there is a pretty big debate going on whether the oil soaked birds should be cleaned up or put down…it’s bad business either way.

The National Wildlife Federation is looking for all sorts of volunteers and any kind of donation to help the situation. Please take a look at the website and see what you can do.
